The Norfolk Bottle Shop
Branthill Farm is a tenanted family farm on the Holkham Estate. The Norfolk Bottle Shop is located on the farm just 2 miles outside town on the Wells to Fakenham B1105.
The shop stocks over 50 local real ales, and a core range of 6 of their own craft beers, brewed onsite using the farm’s Maris Otter barley. They also stock a great selection of wines and spirits produced in Norfolk, along with artisan products and snacks.
Adjacent to the shop is ‘Barley to Beer’ where you’ll find information charting the barley to beer story and the history of brewing and beer both on the farm and in the region.
The Norfolk Bottle Shop showcases real ale with provenance, made from quality local ingredients. No visit to Wells is complete until you’ve stopped by and stocked up!
The shop was founded by farmer Teddy Maufe (now retired), an award-winning grower of Maris Otter barley, regarded by many specialist and craft brewers as the best malting barley in the world.
Teddy and Sally Maufe set up The Real Ale Shop in 2004 with the simple mission of joining up their malting barley with the local brewers, and selling the ale on the farm where the barley was grown.
North Norfolk is steeped in a rich malting and brewing heritage and for 20 years Teddy and Sally forged an unparalleled bond with the brewers that supply the shop, ensuring the strongest connection between the best malting barley and the finest real ales.
This malting barley also supplies the family’s own craft brewery, Malt Coast, located on the farm.
Since Teddy Maufe retired, the business has been passed to his two sons, Max and Bruin, who, along with their wives, Andrea and Atessa, have rebranded the shop and made some exciting new additions.
North Norfolk has long been recognized as one of the most favoured locations in the world to produce top quality malt for real ales. This is due to its winning combination of soil type and distinctive coastal climate, which helps extend the natural ripening process, giving the malt a superior quality.
The Malt Coast ‘Barley to Beer’ Brewery Tour demonstrates the journey of malting barley from field to glass. The one hour tour ends with a tasting session of a range of their craft beers.
In summer, delicious pizza is served straight from the wood fired oven to eat in or takeaway.
The family friendly beer garden has tables nestled amongst fruit trees and the surrounding farm. An indoor seating area is also available for you to enjoy your purchases from the shop, as well as Malt Coast on draught.
Why not stay in a lovely bell tent on Branthill Farm? A short stroll away from the shop, there are 6 bell tents with stunning views of the surrounding farm.
The open field setting is home to the 6m cotton bell tents, hedged and sheltered, and just a short drive to the coast.
As the farm is part of the Holkham Estate, you’re not far from everything Holkham has to offer including miles of marked cycle trails around the parkland, the Palladian Hall, walled garden, nature reserve and beautiful beach.
