Arthur Howell is one such story.
Arthur Howell Butchers is a family affair. Arthur’s great grandfather founded the original butchers in Binham in 1889, and both his grandfather and father were butchers. Arthur, along with his wife, daughter and son-in-law, are all part of the business.
Serving a large community of loyal customers, including some of the area’s leading hotels & restaurants, the family take great pride in the quality of their meat. Using their own on-site abattoir, they are able to process meat sourced from local farmers who share the same attitude to high standards and animal welfare as themselves.
The business sources the majority of its meat from within a 15-mile radius, with cattle coming from the Holkham Estate and outdoor-reared pigs from Tim Allen, a third generation farmer in South Creake.
Arthur champions local game due to its great taste, good value and sustainability. In Norfolk, edible game birds and mammals are plentiful, and the meat packed full of natural flavours. Deer from the Holkham Estate provide Arthur with venison during the game season.
Arthur Howell Butchers has expanded to include a delicatessen and bakery, all located on Staithe Street. The family also have another butcher’s shop in Burnham Market.
The Arthur Howell Bakery offers fresh bread & filled rolls, cakes, pastries and huge fresh cream meringues. Also serves hot bacon baguettes and homemade soup. The signature sausage rolls are made with their own sausage meat.
The Alexandra Howell Deli stocks all you need for a picnic including cooked meats, individual quiches & pies, Italian breads, olives and an impressive choice of cheese. You’ll also find oils, chilli sauces & chutneys, local ales & cider. You won’t leave empty handed.
The Farm Shop & Deli Awards, an event that attracts thousands of food producers, suppliers and retailers from all over the country, awarded Arthur Howell Butcher of the Year 2016. He also won the overall award for Retailer of the Year 2016.
2025 marks his sixth year as a judge for the prestigious awards.
Arthur Howell was awarded ‘Champion Butcher of the Year’ in the East of England at the 2024 Countryside Alliance Awards.
Known as the ‘Rural Oscars’, the awards celebrate businesses that “go the extra mile within their communities, supporting the local economy and championing local goods and services”.
