Sheringham Little Theatre
Whatever time of year it is, there is entertainment on the stage or screen at Sheringham Little Theatre. Famous for the summer drama season and the professional panto which adds extra fun to the festive period in winter.
Throughout spring and autumn too, there is professional and amateur drama, movies, music and screenings of top national opera and ballet. A theatre for all seasons!
The stage hosts fun farce, spine-tingling suspense and singalong musicals, while movies and top national arts events are beamed on to the big screen. Cosy café-style comedy and jazz are staged in the coffee bar.
The theatre is renowned for being one of the last remaining outposts of a summer theatre season. The intimate panto is a big favourite for families across North Norfolk.
The community also gets involved in the shows, from local “am drams” to youth groups staging drama and musicals.
The Hub café provides a popular watering hole for people to drop in for snacks, light lunches, cakes and cuppas, as well as pre-show suppers at some events.
All in friendly surroundings with a theatrical flavour where you can also keep in touch with the programme of stage and screen events.
The Theatre originally housed whelk coppers for boiling the local seafood. In 1896 it was developed into 6 shops and a community hall used for concerts, dances and shows.
Well-known Norfolk business Jarrold & Sons bought the properties in 1900, taking over the retail part, but keeping the hall for lectures, concerts and sales of work.
During the silent movie boom times of the 1920s and 30s it was used as a cinema and reopened as the Picture House, with tea rooms, in 1948.
Within 3 months it was taken over by the Sheringham Urban District Council and revamped as a theatre, with a summer rep season.
Since 1973 the theatre has been run by the Little Theatre Society charity, and received major improvements supported by fundraising and the National Lottery to make it into today’s award-winning venue.
Further funding in 1995 and 2007 saw major facelifts of facilities with the Hub café being refurbished in 2023.
